History of the Artifact

This silver drachm was struck between 405 and 370 B.C. in the ancient Greek city of Neapolis, located in Macedon near the northern Aegean coast. The obverse features the striking head of a Gorgon, rendered with wild hair and a fierce, almost hypnotic gaze. In Greek mythology, the Gorgons were protective figures whose terrifying visage was believed to ward off evil — a powerful apotropaic symbol commonly used on shields, temples, and coins. The choice of the Gorgon for Neapolis’s coinage reflected both a desire for divine protection and an assertion of local identity, as the city’s name, meaning “New City,” symbolized vitality and rebirth under the watchful power of the gods.

The reverse depicts a horse grazing peacefully, a design that contrasts the violent energy of the Gorgon with calm and balance. The horse likely alludes to the agricultural prosperity of the region and its association with the cavalry traditions of nearby Macedon. The image captures the grace and strength of Greek engraving in the late Classical period, where even small coins were treated as miniature works of art. Silver drachms like this circulated widely through northern Greece and the Aegean, serving as both currency and emblem of civic pride — uniting mythic imagery with the practical beauty of Greek craftsmanship.
