History of the Artifact

This silver denarius was struck between 13 and 14 A.D., during the final year of Augustus’s reign and the early rule of his successor, Tiberius. The obverse features a finely detailed portrait of Tiberius, depicted with a composed and dignified expression that reflects the continuity of imperial authority from Augustus to his adopted son. At this time, Tiberius was consolidating power, maintaining the stability and traditions that Augustus had established. His portrait conveyed restraint, discipline, and legitimacy — qualities meant to reassure a Roman world that had known decades of peace under the first emperor.

The reverse shows a draped female figure seated to the right, holding a branch in her left hand and a scepter in her right. This figure, often interpreted as Pax (the personification of peace) or Livia represented as Pax, symbolizes the prosperity and stability of the empire under Tiberius’s leadership. The branch signifies peace and renewal, while the scepter represents authority and order. Coins of this type served as subtle but powerful propaganda, presenting Tiberius not as a conqueror but as a guardian of the peace established by Augustus — a message that resonated across the empire as one age ended and another began.
