History of the Artifact

Silver denarii bearing the name of Lucius Thorius Balbus were struck around 105 B.C., during the later years of the Roman Republic. The obverse shows the head of Juno Sospita facing right, identified by her unique goat-skin headdress, the horns visible above her brow. Juno Sospita was the guardian deity of Lanuvium, the ancestral home of the Thorius family, and her image linked the coin’s design to the moneyer’s heritage and local cult traditions. The fine engraving captures her as both fierce and divine, a symbol of protection and fertility under whose favor the state and its people thrived.

The reverse depicts a bull charging right, a dynamic and muscular composition that conveys the energy and strength of Rome itself. The inscriptions L • THORIVS below and BALBVS in the exergue identify Lucius Thorius Balbus as the official who authorized the issue. The design may also allude to a play on his name, since Thorius sounds like taurus, Latin for bull. Altogether, the imagery presents a balance between divine guardianship and martial vitality, qualities that the Roman Republic admired and that families like the Thorii sought to celebrate through their coinage.
